There has been an increasing amount of column inches devoted to the changes which have occurred in Myanmar, and as one who has had a commercial contact with the country since 1994 when we opened our first office in Yangon, and in 1998 when we first produced the Myanmar Business Guide, the changes which have occurred over the last several years are certainly worthy of comment. This particular article addresses some of the issues which may be of interest to those who wish to evaluate the commercial opportunities in the country.

The ABC launched its India Programme for 2012 with a well-attended and informative event at the Parramatta Park Royal in May. Special guest speakers, Walter da Gama, Director, Luxor Finance Pty Ltd and Dr. Jagwinder Virk, Australian Chairman of GOPIO, imparted some interesting facts in their overviews of India as a trade destination and some important advice on doing business in this dynamic market.

Westpac site on the market
The historic 4-level building and the adjacent modern building totalling 1275 square metres, on the corner of George and Church streets, in the Parramatta CBD, and occupied by Westpac on a long-term lease, is on the market. The building underwent a major upgrade in 2009/10. The net income is approximately $536,815 annually.The site has been occupied by a bank since 1874.

In a first for Western Sydney, four Austrade Business Development Managers (BDMs) visited the region meeting with local businesses on Monday 25 th June at TAFE NSW – Western Sydney Institute's Kingswood Campus. Representing China, Malaysia, Thailand and Korea, "The "Detroits of Asia” these BDMs are usually only accessible in their own countries however thanks to Austrade, Penrith Business Association, WSTAFE and the ABC local businesses had the opportunity to engage the panel in discussion and to meet with them one-on-one.
