Whilst it’s widely suggested that manufacturing is in decline, it currently contributes over 16% to the GRP of Western Sydney, making it the largest industry sector in the region and the 2nd largest employer.
In order to secure the long-term economic success of Western Sydney it is vital that this sector remain competitive both domestically and internationally. It has become clear that manufacturing in Western Sydney can no longer compete on price.
To remain competitive we must innovate. A recent report by the Australia Institute states “There is more economic space than at any time in recent years to expand investment, production, and employment in value-added manufacturing.”
In a bid to foster this much needed innovation the Federal Government is investing $238 million over four years in six Industry Growth Centres:
- Advanced Manufacturing
- Cyber Security
- Food and Agribusiness
- Medical Technologies and Pharmaceuticals
- Mining Equipment
- Technology and Services Oil
- Gas and Energy Resources
We will examine how manufacturing in Australia and Western Sydney competes and how effective the current strategies are in ensuring Western Sydney remains competitive. We will also hear from successful organisations who have transformed their business into innovative advanced manufacturers by diversifying their product line and supply chain.
