By Diana Tapp, CEO of World Class Teams

At some stage in their career, every leader has been told, "You need to delegate more." But why is delegation so crucial to the people in charge of a team?

Most middle managers, supervisors and team leaders feel the need to do everything themselves. They tend to hang on to all the tasks they did in their previous role AND manage people, so they become burnt out, overloaded and overwhelmed!

Too many managers believe delegating isn't worth the effort. The problem is that they have never learned how to delegate effectively. They don't know how to 'sell' the job to the person and gain their genuine commitment to doing it.

    WHAT YOU'LL GET

Learning to delegate well is a win-win-win situation.

Your team members win because they get opportunities to grow and develop. Your company wins because they get more output, increased retention and better-engaged employees. And lastly, you win because it improves your reputation as a leader and puts you in a position where you're in high demand for bigger opportunities.

In this live-streamed training, you'll discover:

    • The proven 6-step model for delegating successfully
    • How to 'sell' rather than ask your team to complete tasks
    • Why you need to implement the critical final step in delegation
    • How to be confident the task is being done well without micromanaging
    • Avoid burnout for yourself and your best people

    WHO IS IT FOR

Middle Managers, Team Leaders and Supervisors who want to:

    • Lift up and become more strategic
    • Make smarter, longer-term decisions
    • Make their job easier, more enjoyable and less stressful
    • Create happy, engaged teams that experience greater job satisfaction and boosted morale
    • Earn a reputation as a world class leader
    • Become the person everyone wants to work for!

    WHAT'S INCLUDED

    • 45-minute live-streamed workshop
    • 15-minute live Q&A
    • Printable Action Pack with tools, techniques and templates
    • 30-day access to a recording of the session

From spicy street food, to beating drums and colourful dance, the tastes, sounds and spirit of South Asia are set to be celebrated across Parramatta as the City marks 75 years of Indian independence.

On Monday 15 August, City of Parramatta Council will host a flag raising ceremony at Jubilee Park in Parramatta’s CBD, with Lord Mayor Cr Donna Davis to be joined by the Consul-General of India, Manish Gupta for the special event.

Cr Davis said the City of Parramatta is home to the largest population of Indian and South Asian people in Australia, with more than 29,000 residents identifying India as their country of birth in the 2021 Census.

“Our South Asian communities are an integral part of our City,” Cr Davis said.

“This year is a special one for our Indian community with it being 75 years since India’s independence. The event allows our communities to connect with their homeland and embrace the traditions of their Indian culture. We are proud to fly the Indian national flag to mark this momentous occasion.”

Council’s Parramatta’s Heritage and Visitor Centre has also created an Indian Independence Day online experience which features photos and local stories. Free video resources on the history of Indian Independence Day are also available through City of Parramatta Libraries.

From 12 August, Council will switch on an electrifying lighting installation through Harris Park and along the banks of the Parramatta River as part of a six-month program supporting local South Asian businesses and culture.

Marion Street will feature two decorated arches while an array of colourful lights will illuminate Parramatta River from the Ferry Terminal to Lennox Bridge until October 30. Extra elements will be added to transform the foreshore for Diwali celebrations, including a run of flags with peacocks and elephant motifs and a series of lighting installations on the Barry Wilde Bridge.

In the lead up to Indian Independence Day, Riverside Theatres will be hosting two ticketed events – Spicy Fusion, a colourful blend of dance and music, and Indian musical Simha the King. The festival also features a free event in Prince Alfred Square with live music, food, dance, rides and family fun on Sunday 7 August.

“I encourage everyone to come along and celebrate the rich heritage, culture and warmth of our dynamic Indian communities,” Cr Davis said.

City of Parramatta Council has scooped a prestigious accolade for its flagship food, music and art festival, Parramatta Lanes, at this year’s Local Government Week Awards.

The annual Local Government of NSW event, now in its 36th year, celebrates the achievements and positive impact local governments have on their communities through creative solutions.

Council’s 2021 Parramatta Lanes was awarded the RH Dougherty Award for Innovation in Special Events, recognising its creative approach to adapting the event post lockdown.

Parramatta Lanes is one of NSW’s most popular festivals, connecting communities with a celebration of food, music and art. Last year’s event welcomed people back to the city with live music and comedy shows at local bars and restaurants, as well as a ‘COVID-friendly’ interactive augmented reality art trail that led visitors on a unique journey through the CBD streets and showcased the creative work of some of Australia’s top emerging artists.

Lord Mayor Cr Donna Davis said Parramatta has a wonderfully diverse range of night-time offerings and it’s an honour to be recognised among some of the state’s most outstanding events.

“Last year’s Parramatta Lanes was a fun and vibrant event that brought people safely back into our great City to reconnect over food, art and culture after two challenging years,” Cr Davis said.

“Congratulations to our hardworking staff for creatively adapting to the challenges in the face of COVID-19. The City of Parramatta continually strives for excellence in our events, and we’re honoured to be recognised at this year’s coveted Local Government Awards.”

Last year, Parramatta Lanes was awarded the Best Cultural, Arts or Music Event at the Australian Event Awards for Council’s 2020 hybrid event, which combined home-delivered meals with online live-streamed entertainment.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Parramatta Lanes, with a return to an exciting program throughout the CBD’s streets and laneways in October.

The City of Parramatta is set to spend more than $200 million on important community projects over the next twelve months, including Council’s new community and civic hub and aquatic centre.

Council has endorsed its Operational Plan and Budget for 2022/23, with $209 million allocated for capital works projects, on top of the $311.4 million to be spent delivering vital services to the community.

Community projects include $33.9 million for the Parramatta Aquatic Centre; $15.8 million for revitalisation of the Town Hall and $6.7 million for upgrades to Charles Street Square.

Lord Mayor Cr Donna Davis said it was important that Council continued to invest heavily in community infrastructure to support the City’s growing population, as the recovery from COVID-19 continues.

“The pandemic highlighted the important role Council plays delivering critical services to our residents and businesses as well as building and maintaining the open spaces and public facilities that our community needs and uses every day,” Cr Davis said.

“Sound financial planning over the past two years has allowed us to put forward a strong capital works program that includes revitalisation of local roads, parks, sport and community centres. This budget is our blueprint for the future so we can flourish and evolve while continuing to deliver a high level of infrastructure and services for our communities.

“The City of Parramatta is rapidly transforming and growing. We need to ensure our City remains a sustainable, liveable and productive place for present and future generations.”

The Operational Plan and Budget 2022/23 is part of Council’s Delivery Program 2022-2026, outlining how Council will implement its core services, activities, programs, projects, fees and charges, over four years.

Council reviews the Operational Plan and Budget annually to ensure activities are on track with its Delivery Program and priority goals. The Plans can be viewed on the City of Parramatta website.

Australia’s best airport terminal is coming to life with work continuing on what will be the gateway welcoming passengers from across the world to Sydney’s west in only a few short years.

Western Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Simon Hickey said the terminal is now coming to life, with the airport’s future customers helping to shape what will be Australia’s new global gateway.

“This will be the people’s airport, designed from the ground up for our customers and with our customers,” Mr Hickey said.

“Piling of the terminal basement is now complete and concreting has passed the halfway mark. We’ve also started the concrete pour for what will eventually be the entrance to international and domestic departures.

“This terminal will be Australia’s newest and most exciting airport experience, offering a smooth, seamless connection from Sydney to the world.

“Every element of this airport is being designed to deliver the most seamless and reliable experience possible for customers. We will get passengers on their way sooner, whether that’s getting to your meeting on time or arriving home to loved ones.”

Mr Hickey said thousands of Australians have now signed up to the Western Sydney International Panel, regularly contributing their opinions on different elements of the airport experience, from their dream travel destinations to the retail and dining choices they want to see in the terminal.

A group of WSI Panel members, as well as some of Australia’s leading airlines, were recently invited to an exclusive viewing of the airport terminal plans, projected in real-life scale at LifeSize Plans in Western Sydney, to hear their feedback on different mock-ups and options for the terminal’s detailed layout.

Mr Hickey said the terminal is being designed with the customer at its heart – from passengers, airlines, airport staff and air cargo operators.

“Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport will set a new benchmark for what Australians will expect when they fly and the input from the WSI Panel members is already helping to bring that to life,” Mr Hickey said.

“We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build an airport from the ground up with consideration for emerging technologies and sustainability at the forefront.

“We’re committed to ensuring the design pays tribute to Western Sydney’s rich Aboriginal heritage, connecting visitors arriving in Australia at Western Sydney International to more than 60,000 years of First Nations culture.”

WSI is on track to open to international, domestic and air cargo services in late 2026.
