Western Sydney is set to be transformed as Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) gets closer to opening for 24/7 freight operations from the end of July and passenger services from 25 October 2026.
As Australia’s first major greenfield airport in more than 50 years, WSI will play an important role in meeting Sydney’s growing aviation needs, improving access to domestic and international travel, and strengthening Western Sydney’s position as a major hub for jobs, freight, business and investment.
For BMD, contributing to this once-in-a-generation infrastructure project through the delivery of two major packages has been a significant opportunity to support the future of the region.
As part of the AeroWest Joint Venture, BMD delivered the Landside Civil and Building Works, which was recognised at the 2026 Civil Contractors Federation New South Wales Earth Awards, winning the Project Value Greater than $150 million category. The project has also been shortlisted for the prestigious 2026 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards – Project of the Year, with winners to be announced in Sydney later this year.
The package forms a key part of WSI’s supporting infrastructure, integrating road, bus and future rail connections that link the terminal precinct to the new M12 Motorway and Sydney’s broader transport network. This infrastructure will support seamless passenger and freight movement while providing the essential access needed for the airport to operate efficiently.
Additionally, BMD was recognised internationally at the inaugural New Civil Engineer Airports Awards in the United Kingdom, winning Airside Project of the Year for the delivery of WSI’s Aprons design and construct subcontract.
The airport’s apron is a vital piece of operational infrastructure. It will enable aircraft parking, passenger boarding and disembarkation, refuelling and pre-departure activities. Delivering this asset required exceptional technical expertise, rigorous planning and seamless coordination within a highly regulated aviation environment.
BMD’s work at the airport continues with its recent appointment by Charter Hall and WSI to deliver Stage 1 of its Business Precinct. This first stage will establish key infrastructure and services to support the precinct’s early operations and the growing needs of the region, including the delivery of serviced super lots, roads and assorted buildings including warehousing and bulky goods facilities.
