This October, thousands of Australians will get on their bikes for one goal: to fight kids’ cancer.

The Great Cycle Challenge brings together riders from across the country to raise vital funds for childhood cancer research at Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI).

Since it started 13 years ago, riders have completed more than 35 million kilometres and raised over $48.5 million, helping scientists work towards better treatments and cures for kids like Isla.

Isla was just two when a small rash led to a diagnosis of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

She went from swimming and riding her bike through the park one day, to starting intensive cancer treatment the next.

During her first week of treatment, Isla underwent immediate blood and platelet transfusions, chemotherapy, a bone marrow biopsy and lumbar puncture.
Over the following 10 months, she endured seven different IV chemotherapy protocols and two rounds of immunotherapy.

“You are raising awareness and funds in order to improve outcomes for our kids…as a cancer parent, I don’t think I’ll ever find the right words to thank you for all the advocacy and the compassion you show,” said Isla’s mum, Gena.

Around 1,000 children are diagnosed with cancer in Australia each year. By taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge, you’re helping researchers develop better treatments and move closer to a cure for childhood cancer.

Ride solo, or rally your colleagues and create a team ¬– all ages and abilities are encouraged to set a personal riding goal, challenge yourself to ride throughout October, and raise funds to fight kids’ cancer.

Because kids should be living life, not fighting for it.
