    Carollers, tinsel and twinkling trees will transform the City of Parramatta into a Christmas wonderland this festive season – with a special visit from a very generous ‘virtual’ Santa.

    Libraries across the local government area, from Carlingford to Constitution Hill, will be filled with Christmas trees from now until January, including at PHIVE in Parramatta Square, with street decorations also bringing some festive cheer to the City’s suburbs over summer.

    Council’s much-anticipated 12-metre-high Christmas tree has been unveiled in its new home in Parramatta Square, where locals and visitors can record a video with our special ‘virtual’ Santa on Instagram stories for a chance to win one of five Christmas Stay & Play in Parramatta prize packages valued at over $650 each.

    Carollers and live music will ring throughout Parramatta Square from 8-11 December, and again from 14-18 December, to get everyone in the festive mood. There will also be various community carols events across the City, including Parramatta Christian Church on Saturday 3 December, Twilight Christmas Magic at Old Government House from 8-22 December, and Epping’s Boronia Park on Sunday 11 December.

    Council’s popular Christmas Markets are also back, selling unique gifts from artisan and handmade products, to sustainably and ethically produced gourmet food on Wednesday 14 December from 7.30am to 2.30pm, and Thursday 15 December from 11am to 8:30pm for some late-night shopping.

    “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the City of Parramatta,” City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Donna Davis said.

    “It’s a wonderful time of the year and rounds off a big 2022 for our City, which included the opening of PHIVE, the unveiling of our fabulous ‘Place of the Eels’ artwork in Parramatta Square, as well as the return of Parramatta Lanes and many other events.

    “It’s the perfect time for you to immerse yourself and explore our vibrant CBD and suburban shopping strips, as you catch up with friends and family over the festive period.”

    The City of Parramatta has also launched its 2022 Good Gift Guide to help with your Christmas shopping while supporting local businesses and charitable causes.

    “The Good Gift Guide has a wide range of gift ideas and a list of local businesses so you can support local by buying local,” Cr Davis said.

    “Every gift bought strengthens our local economy, which is vitally important after the particularly tough two years we’ve had.”

    Families are invited to cool off and enjoy a fun-filled day at Epping Aquatic Centre’s Pool Party on Saturday 17 December between 12pm and 4pm. Parents and children can dive into the festive spirit with a barbecue, petting zoo, pool inflatables, and a DJ. There will be an array of exciting prizes on offer throughout the day too.

    There’s also a variety of festive entertainment at Riverside Theatres throughout the month, including River City Voices’ Slam Messiah on 16 December, Sydney Comedy Club on 17 December, and A Very Naughty Christmas from 21-23 December.

    Powerhouse Parramatta and Western Sydney International (Nancy Bird-Walton) Airport are joining forces to amplify tourism, attract national and international visitors to Western Sydney and bolster STEM education as part of a new landmark agreement.

    This groundbreaking partnership between two major Western Sydney infrastructure projects will see the largest museum in NSW and a leading museum in the Southern Hemisphere collaborate with Western Sydney’s world-class airport on joint initiatives, research and strategic programs in the area of First Nations, STEM, and aviation.

    Western Sydney is Australia’s third-largest economy behind the Sydney CBD and Melbourne1. 800,000 new residents are projected over the next 20 years, making the region one of the fastest growing urban populations in Australia2. This unique partnership will accelerate Western Sydney’s overnight visitor economy, which already contributes $4.2 billion to the NSW economy annually3.

    WSIA and Powerhouse Parramatta will be landmark Australian destinations, actively contributing to the renewal and redefinition of the Western Sydney visitor economy as dynamic, contemporary and distinctive. WSIA is Australia’s newest global gateway, a curfew-free 24-hour international airport providing seamless and reliable service for domestic and international customers. It will create tens of thousands of jobs in Western Sydney, most of which will be highly skilled in areas such as engineering, manufacturing, defence and education.

    Powerhouse Parramatta will be a contemporary world-class museum and vibrant 24-hour precinct, presenting an ever-changing program including large scale cultural and community events for up to 10,000 people.

    Under this agreement, Powerhouse Parramatta and WSIA will provide world-class STEM educational resources and immersive, engaging aviation education experiences for students in Western Sydney. It offers opportunities for students and young people to engage with over 500,000 Powerhouse collection items alongside learning experiences offered by aviation industry experts.

    “Western Sydney is home to some of the most unique attractions in Australia and a key contributor to the NSW Visitor Economy. This strategic partnership between two of the state’s most significant infrastructure projects, Western Sydney International (Nancy Bird-Walton) Airport and Powerhouse Parramatta, will be instrumental to realising the government's vision to bolster Western Sydney as major tourism destination for domestic and international visitors,” said Minister for the Arts and Tourism, Ben Franklin.

    “We are very excited to partner with Powerhouse Parramatta in an initiative which will inspire young minds to set their sights on one of the tens of thousands of highly skilled jobs being created in and around Australia’s newest global gateway right here in Western Sydney,” said Western Sydney Airport CEO, Simon Hickey.

    “We are thrilled to announce this partnership with Western Sydney International (Nancy Bird-Walton) Airport. With Powerhouse Parramatta expected to attract over 2 million visitors in its first year of operation in 2025, Western Sydney International Airport is a key strategic partner for bringing interstate and international visitors to the Powerhouse and positioning Western Sydney as an international tourism destination. The collaborative tourism economy initiatives and STEM education opportunities underpinning this partnership will provide a significant uplift for Western Sydney as a hub of economic, social, cultural and 24-hour visitor activity,” said Powerhouse Chief Executive, Lisa Havilah.

    Powerhouse today launched its inaugural Climate Action Plan 2022 – 2025, which sets out 12 key objectives encompassing infrastructure, programs and operations across the museum’s four sites, including the ambitious target of achieving net zero operational carbon emissions by 2025. These important commitments place the Powerhouse in a global leadership position.

    Sustainability is integral to the Powerhouse renewal, which presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to embed low carbon solutions into Powerhouse’s infrastructure to reduce its operational environmental impact and improve its responsiveness to climate, season and sustainability.

    The pioneering action plan is guided by the museum’s Caring for Country Principles. Developed in consultation with First Nations peoples of the Country on which Powerhouse sites are located, these principles will support Powerhouse staff and collaborators to implement actions in the plan.

    The plan aligns with Australian and international best practice in addressing the global climate crisis. It includes a commitment to reduce total energy consumption by 20% from FY 2018/19 baseline, achieve 90% resource recovery from production and operational waste and achieve zero increase in potable water use from FY 2018/19 baseline by 2025.

    Steps to achieve net zero operations include maximising onsite renewable energy opportunities, eliminating fossil fuel use, enhancing biodiversity values, integrating water harvesting and reuse in property operations at all sites and standardising a zero-waste approach to exhibition construction and operational waste management.

    Powerhouse will also integrate climate action into programming and practice by embedding sustainability into collection management, prioritising collaboration and research with climate change thought leaders and industry to showcase innovation and ideas and reducing carbon emission impacts associated with exhibition design and program development. A dedicated curatorial role will be created that focusses on climate change science and sustainability.

    The future flagship museum Powerhouse Parramatta is being constructed to the highest 6 Star Green Star Standard under the Green Building Council of Australia’s new Green Star Buildings rating tool. It will feature net zero operations from the day it opens in 2025. Net zero operations is embedded into the design principles for the Powerhouse Ultimo renewal. Powerhouse Castle Hill will reduce carbon emissions by maximising solar supply onsite and transitioning away from fossil fuel use by 2025. A Conservation Management Plan is being prepared for Sydney Observatory that includes a biodiversity assessment to enhance the biodiversity value of the site, prioritising Indigenous plants, diversity of species and sustainable landscaping practices.

    ‘As Australia’s leading museum of innovation in applied arts and sciences, Powerhouse is uniquely placed to raise awareness and showcase the role technology, engineering, science and design can play in addressing climate change and sustainability challenges,’ said Minister for the Arts Ben Franklin.

    ‘Taking an international leadership position on sustainability to address climate change is essential to the Powerhouse’s renewal. Sustainability is more than a requirement for Powerhouse, it is our story and responsibility,’ said Powerhouse Chief Executive Lisa Havilah.

    ‘The Powerhouse is creating museums that reflect the knowledge, understanding and ingenuity of First Nations peoples to care for Country in ways that are inherently sustainable. This Climate Action Plan embeds Caring for Country Principles developed by our First Nations communities as its foundation,’ said Powerhouse Director First Nations, Emily McDaniel.

    When it comes to supporting research there is no challenge great enough for the supporters and scientists of Children’s Medical Research Institute at Westmead.

    Earlier this month they climbed three mountains as part of the 3 Peaks Challenge, hiking three of Australia’s tallest mountains in Kosciusko National Park to fundraise for research. They even came across snow!!!

    CMRI’s very own researchers and old staff alumni got involved to support the challenge, and one of the hikers was Einion Thomas, a consultant who has worked for CMRI for several years.

    “When I worked with CMRI, I was so impressed by the dedication and focus of the researchers and the passion they bring to their work, underpinning remarkable discoveries and making a big difference in the lives of so many,’’ Einion said.

    “I know how enthusiastic the researchers are for what they do and the discoveries they make, and it’s an organisation that really focuses on the children who need this help.’’

    Vaishnavi Veeraraghavan is one of our very own cancer researchers who decided to not only do the mountain challenge, but to cut off her long hair to fundraise and honour her mother who fought cancer several years ago.

    “When my mum lost her hair, which in Indian culture is very important to us, it was very hard for her,’’ Vaishnavi said. “I wanted to cut my hair as part of this fundraiser in support of her.’’

    “The research we are doing has such an important place alongside clinical research. To think about patients who are in pain and suffering – that’s what keeps you motivated as a researcher. My connection to cancer inspired me to do something outside of research to create a discussion and awareness about what we do as researchers.’’

    It’s not too late to sponsor the climbers, please visit 3 Peaks NSW - Inspired Adventures (cmri.org.au)

    End-of-Year Work Functions

    For most employees, end-of-year work functions represent an opportunity to catch up with their colleagues and reflect on the past working year. The relaxed atmosphere at these functions, which are typically held away from the office or workplace, may lead employees to forget they are at a work function. The availability of alcohol at these functions can further cause employees to engage in unprofessional or otherwise undesirable behaviours.

    The question of whether an employer can discipline an employee for conduct occurring outside of ordinary working hours is one which arises often in the context of end-of-year work functions. Following a series of cases relating to dismissals for out-of-hours misconduct, it is now generally accepted that an employee may face disciplinary action for such conduct where there is a relevant connection between the conduct and the employment relationship.

    End-of-year work functions are usually considered to have a sufficient connection to an employee’s employment, particularly if an employer has organised the function or has encouraged employees’ attendance at the function.

    What is Sexual Harassment?

    Sexual harassment is a form of sex discrimination which is unlawful in the workplace and other areas of public life. Sexual harassment involves unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature or a request for sexual favours. In order for such conduct to be unlawful, it is necessary to demonstrate that a reasonable person would have anticipated that the conduct would have made the victim feel offended, humiliated or intimidated.

    Additionally, under work health and safety legislation, employers have a duty to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of their employees, including by protecting their employees from sexual harassment. This duty is not limited to the employer’s workplace, and extends to any location or situation relating to work including end-of-year work functions.

    In certain circumstances, an employer may be found to be vicariously liable for the sexual harassment engaged in by its employees – particularly if the employer ignored or failed to take steps to prevent the sexual harassment from occurring.

    The Further Respect@Work Bill

    In late September 2022, the Federal Government introduced a further Respect@Work bill in an attempt to provide greater protections against workplace sexual harassment. This further Respect@Work bill follows an earlier bill passed in 2021 in response to the Respect@Work Report released by the Australian Human Rights Commission in March 2020.

    If passed, the further Respect@Work bill will implement a further 7 of the 55 recommendations of the Respect@Work Report, including:

    • by imposing a positive duty on employers to take "reasonable and proportionate" measures to eliminate sex discrimination, sexual harassment and victimisation, as far as possible – including in relation to conduct engaged in by third parties such as customers or clients of the employer;
    • by prohibiting conduct that subjects another person to a workplace environment that is hostile on the ground of sex; and
    • by lowering the threshold of harassment on the grounds of sex (currently, the threshold for harassment on the grounds of sex is “unwelcome conduct of a seriously demeaning nature” - the bill proposes to remove the word “seriously” from that definition).

    Recommended Actions

    To ensure compliance with the further changes and stricter duties arising from the further Respect@Work bill (as a pro-active measure and for good corporate governance), employers should update all relevant policies, procedures and online training modules, and ensure that their employees understand what sexual harassment is and that sexual harassment will not be tolerated in the workplace.

    In the context of upcoming end-of-year work functions, employers should also consider:

    • managing employees’ consumption of alcohol by limiting the types and quantity of alcohol available (i.e. by only making wine or light-strength beer available);
    • ensuring that a senior member of management remains present (and sober) during the function, who can monitor employees’ behaviour and intervene where sexual harassment and other unacceptable conduct occurs or is likely to occur;
    • ensuring employees do not bring alcohol from home or illicit drugs to the function;
    • reminding employees that the function is work-related and that employees are expected to demonstrate the same standards of behaviour that apply during ordinary working hours;
    • clearly communicating when the function will conclude;
    • ensuring that employees either leave the venue at the end of the function, or are made aware that their continued presence at the venue after the function is unrelated to their employment; and
    • reminding employees prior to the function that sexual harassment is unacceptable and may result in disciplinary action, up to and including the termination of employment.

    If incidents do occur during an end-of-year work function, employers MUST promptly investigate the incident and take remedial and/or disciplinary action (after due process) where appropriate as soon as possible.

    If the termination of an employee’s employment is being considered, employers should first obtain professional legal advice to ensure that the termination process is procedurally fair and that the decision to terminate can be objectively justified (to help protect against unfair dismissal claims).
