TJS Services are proud to announce sponsorship of the Kid’s Cancer Project in line with the charity’s national bus tour beginning this month.

Founded by Col Reynolds in 1993, The Kid’s Cancer Project is a national charity committed to combatting childhood cancer through scientific research.

The partnership will see both TJS and The Kid’s Cancer Project align their values as community driven organisations as they work in unison to raise awareness for childhood cancer.

“We are humbled to be supporting a community based foundation with such strong commitment to addressing childhood cancer. TJS is a business that cares for both client and community, sponsoring the Kid’s Cancer Project gives us the opportunity to give back to a cause that affects over 15,000 children each year” – Chief Executive Officer, Ben Bayot

In line with their support of The Kid’s Cancer Project, TJS will also be supporting the organisation’s Write a Book in a Day campaign, promoting healthy learning and development for schools across the country.

Having already enabled three schools to participate in the program for the first time, the national facility services provider is reaching out to schools experiencing financial hardship and wishing to join the program.

“We cannot thank TJS enough for sponsoring us to enter the competition. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for some of these students and we are so very grateful.” – Matthew Pearce Public School

The support and funding provided by TJS Services and various other corporate partners has lead to great progress.

To date the Kid’s Cancer Project has raised over $200,000 and funded 1.6 scientists with more to follow.

More importantly in the charity’s quest to raise brand awareness for their cause, thousands of people are now following the yellow bus journey locally and from areas outside the bus route - SA, Perth, country NSW and Victoria.

Tips for succeeding when the rules keep changing

In the not so distant future, your competitive landscape could look very different.

The Internet of Things, where more and more devices are connecting to the internet and collecting data, means market disruption is the new normal.

Whether it’s your smart hairbrush that analyses the health of your hair, or a digital legal assistant, technology is infiltrating every part our lives.

This capability is opening doors for a new breed of competitor who is using technology to solve friction within the customer experience, or streamline a business process to slash costs.

So how do you keep track of all this activity – and stay one step ahead? Macquarie Bank’s National Head of Insurance Broking, Eoghan Trehy, believes it’s a matter of making sure you’re well informed, open to new opportunities – and being proactive, rather than reactive.

Insurtech is the latest disrupter that is innovating the insurance industry with new, streamlined technologies that are re-shaping the established model.

“In Australia’s insurance industry, we’re not quite seeing the impact of insurtech on brokers yet. But signals from overseas risk markets and requirements in the domestic/retail sector are an indication of what is to come,” he says.

He gives an example from one of the four new local insurtech start-ups he has spoken to in just the past week.

“They are about to launch a new direct product that will allow SMEs in retail or hospitality to buy insurance on their mobile phone – targeting the emerging demographic who prefer to transact that way. To me, this indicates a big shift in the traditional model. They’re using technology to combine the skills of an underwriter and broker to deliver a better client experience, in a channel Generations X, Y and Millennials prefer.”

Trehy suggests four ways to map your evolving competitor landscape.

Recognition is a powerful motivator because it makes your team feel valued.

When your team feel valued they are more likely to connect with you as their leader, connect to the organisation, be more productive and more engaged.

Great Managers Academy members learn dozens of ways to recognise and motivate their people but here are the top 16.

    1. A Welcome Aboard Card for new starters, signed by everyone in the team

Don’t wait for people to leave to give them a card from everyone – give it to them when they start!

    2. Tell your team members frequently “I know you can do it” or “I believe in you.”

Create a self-fulfilling prophecy – this must be sincere, or it will have the reverse effect.

    3. Take one of your achievers to a Senior Team Meeting and recognise their efforts in front of your peers

Are some people going to feel awkward about this? Of course they are! But, if you could hear what they say about the experience at the family dinner table that night, it is worth a bit of squirming!

    4. Make recognition a Team Activity

Get your team to identify what other team members do best.

Recognition does not have to be all about super high-achievers – you might have someone who is a quiet achiever and really dependable – make sure that quality is recognised too.

    5. Give your team a stack of thank you cards and ask them to recognise others

Even those from different departments. You cannot be everywhere and see everything. It is amazing how supportive other teams will be when they get thanked in a sincere way!

    6. Allow someone to call in “well” and have the day off

    7. Print out and issue certificates for a “long lunch” (2-hour break)

Even better still, take them to lunch and celebrate!

    8. Use an Achievement Logo on your business cards for high achievers who have received ongoing above & beyond awards

    9. Use post-it notes to put hand-written comments or feedback about things done well

These can be put on their desk or on a report, or however you can get it to them – you will find that people will often keep these as a reminder.

    10. Use a trophy or award of some sort that gets rotated to recognise great ideas, creative solutions and valuable input

    11. Pitch in and help with the hard stuff

Demonstrate that you are a team player through recognising when it’s tough and helping them out

    12. If things are “heating up” at deadline time, bring in some gelato or ice cream to cool things down – for some chill out time.

    13. Hire a masseuse & provide a massage for your hard-working team members

    14. Do something that benefits the team member personally - or their family

This will require some budget. For example:

    • Babysitter

    • Cleaner

    • Car washer

    • Send a hamper to their family.

On the higher end of the spending scale you could:

    • Hire a chef to prepare a meal for them at home

    • Rent their dream car for them for a week.

    • Donate on their behalf to their favourite charity

    • Gift vouchers or a Training course of their choice

    15. Acknowledge Service Anniversaries

End of probation, 1yr, 3yrs (strategically you should check where the most of your turnover occurs)

    16. Hold Events for achievements of major goals or milestones

Can be anything from a cup of tea and cake to a party or meal together. Alternatively, a team day out – barefoot bowls is popular. Always link these events to something meaningful!

If you, or your managers, could benefit from improved engagement and productivity, get in touch to learn more about the proven Great Managers Academy.

Campbelltown City Council, together with key strategic partners including the NSW Business Chamber and the South West Sydney Business Enterprise Centre, has developed a business event program aimed at helping businesses grow.

The program calendar, which spans the next 12 months and includes a series of seminars, workshops and capability building programs, encompasses a range of topics suitable for micro, small and medium-sized businesses, or those considering starting a new business.

Mayor of Campbelltown, Cr George Brticevic, said that with the growth forecast for Campbelltown over the next 20 years, Council is committed to fostering opportunities for innovation, leadership and development of businesses within Campbelltown.

“Council recognises the importance of a strong small business sector to the prosperity and vibrancy of our city, and is committed to ensuring local businesses have the support and knowledge they need to succeed,” he said.

“The business event program is part of that commitment, and provides a wealth of opportunities for small business operators to develop the skills they need to thrive. To ensure that even the smallest micro-business can take advantage of the opportunity, the program is financially subsidised by Council.”

The breadth of subject matter is extensive, ranging from social media, branding and all aspects of digital marketing, through to business networking, retail sales, industrial relations and human resources.

Council is also planning a STEM event to drive student interest in these subjects and take advantage of the growing employment opportunities presented in this field.

These include many threatened and vulnerable species including koalas, Tiger Quolls, the Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby, Tasmanian Devils and the Plains Wanderer.

Featherdale has also continued to play an important role in the local community rescuing animals; working closely with school groups through the Wildlife Education Program which hosts visits and the “Wildlife Wanderer;” and offering Community Outreach programs for aged care homes and other local groups.
